Beyond Bars: 50 years of the PEN Writers in Prison Committee, highlights ten of the most significant cases PEN has worked on since 1960. From defending the rights of persecuted writers to promoting literature in translation and sending writers into refugee centres and prisons, English PEN promotes literature as a means of greater understanding between the world's people.
The exhibition will be hosted in the Percy Building foyer from 18 November to 2 December 2011. The reading is hosted in association with English PEN and accompanies an evening with Jack Majanpe, reading from, and discussing, his memoir 'Crocodiles are Hungry at Night' on Thursday 24th November, 7pm, Culture Lab, Newcastle University.
