Colette Bryce’s ‘Ballasting the Ark’ now availableColette Bryce’s ‘Ballasting the Ark’ is a short collection of new poems inspired by her time at Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats as the Leverhulme Poet in Residence. Colette’s poems in ‘Ballasting the Ark’ respond to the location of Dove Marine laboratory, the creatures of its flow-through seawater aquaria, and strands of science such as ballast water treatment and offshore wind turbine technology.
‘Ballasting the Ark’ was launched at Dove Marine Laboratory, Cullercoats on 17th October 2012. Alongside a reading by Colette, there was a screening of three short poem-films, created in collaboration with artist Kate Sweeney. All three films can be viewed on our archive.
Colette Bryce received an Eric Gregory Award in 1995, and published her first collection, The Heel of Bernadette, in 2000. She won the National Poetry Competition in 2003 with The Full Indian Rope Trick, which was voted the favourite winning poem in 2008 in a poll to celebrate 30 years of the National Poetry Competition, and became the title poem of her second collection. Self Portrait in the Dark, her third collection from Picador, was published in 2008. Colette Bryce is the poetry editor of Poetry London.
