As Newcastle University Boat Clubs (NUBC) most successful season comes to a close members continue to compete despite the University vacation.

Women’s Henley               Henley                    15-17 June 2012

The ladies were victorious at Women’s Henley winning the Senior Eight and G P Jeffries Cup , the crew of Nicole Lamb, Charlotte Irving, Gemma Hall, Georgia Parry, Izzy Vyvian, Harriet Broad, Rosie Rust, Charlotte Irving and Lexie Dobson, cox defeated University College Dublin in the final by over 3 lengths in a time of 5.39. The coach was delighted with the performance and just reward for all the commitment that the girls have shown throughout the year. This result qualified the eight for the Remenham Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. The academic eight, coached by Mike Hughes also did well reaching the semi finals in their category.

Metropolitan (2-3 June 2012 ) & Marlow Regatta’s (16-17 June 2012 )

At the Metropolitan Regatta the Men’s coxed four were runners up to the University of London in the senior coxed four while the men’s eight won the intermediate event. At Marlow the coxed four went one better winning the senior coxed four.  These results qualified both crews for Henley Royal regatta.

The Remenham Challenge Cup (W8+)

The Women’s 1st Eight were one of only two University crews, the other being Harvard University, to qualify for the Remenham Challenge Cup. The ladies rowed extremely well in their quarter final against a very experienced crew from the Munchener Ruderclub von 1880 and Hurther Rudergesellschaft boat club, Germany losing by 2 1/4 lengths.

The Temple Challenge Cup (M8+)

The men’s senior eight progressed to the round of 8 by defeating Oxford Brookes University by 3 lengths in a time of 7.13. In the quarter finals they lost by only 1 ½ lengths to Harvard University having led for the first half of the race.

The Prince Albert Challenge Cup (M4+)

The top Newcastle boat, the coxed four of Ed Ford, Sam Arnot, Tim Clark, Alex Leigh and cox Rauridh MacPhee defeated Goldie Boat Club (4 ¼ lengths) and University of London B (easily) to progress to the semi finals. In ideal conditions for rowing Newcastle started quickly and were never headed as they defeated Imperial College, London by 21/4 lengths. The final against the University of London ‘A’ was a very tense affair with Newcastle having a good start and maintaining a lead at the Barrier (2.10)and Fawley (3.40) before being overhauled by London who won in a time of 7.36 3/4 length ahead of the Newcastle crew.

National Championships                 Nottingham         13-15 July 2012

The two NUBC crews, the men’s coxed four of Alex Leigh, Tom Ford, Ed Ford and Tim Clark with cox Rauridh MacPhee and the lightweight pair of Nick Buckle and Matt Smith both won gold medals at the National Championships. The lightweight pair have been selected for England to compete in the home international regatta, Cardiff on 22 July 2012.

World U23 Championships           11-15 July             Trakai, Lithuania

NUBC had 2 athletes competing in the World U23 Rowing championships. George Rossiter, stage 2 Combined Honours, won a bronze medal as part of the GB men’s four. Sam Arnot, stage 1Economics and statistics, was part of the GB eight that finished in fourth place. Both races were very close with both athletes showing great potential for the future.
