To provide a comprehensive overview of the main issues related to the identification, improvement and management of environmental and energy performance of railway systems.

- Better understanding of the true sustainability credentials of railways systems, particularly related to their environmental and energy usage performance;
- Understanding the key challenges ahead for railway systems in the context of a

- Ability to understand the systems approach required to improve the environmental and energy performance of railways;
- Ability to critically identify and analyse the key challenges affecting the sustainability of railway systems from an environmental and energy performance point of view.
