Aims

  • To understand the complex nature of train operations, timetabling and customer satisfaction;
  • To provide advanced knowledge of rail systems operations;
  • To introduce complex train movement according to station, yard and line policies;
  • To assess the level of performance of innovative technologies and futuristic concepts for smart rail services.

Outline of Syllabus

  • Elements of train dispatching and control of rail operations;
  • Terms of rail operations;
  • Scheduling, timetable robustness, disruptions, recovery, crew management;
  • Analysis and estimation of rail network capacity, line capacity, and station capacity;
  • Analysis of customer satisfaction via surveys, feedback and commendations/complaints data;
  • Analytical and simulation modelling methodologies for analysing railway system performance.

Intended Knowledge Outcomes

  • Awareness of customer requirements from the rail service;
  • Knowledge of the basic components of rail operations and train dispatching;
  • Understanding of key aspects of timetable construction and management;
  • Knowledge of suitable tools for system performance analysis and assessment.

Intended Skill Outcomes

The ability to analyse the capacity of rail systems subject to available resources,  demand for rail services, a timetable, traffic rules, etc..
