Thanks to recognised research strength in rail vehicle rolling stock, Newcastle University has been accepted into the UK Rail Research & Innovation Network (UKRRIN). The combined expertise of NewRail, and the Design Unit, together with support and backing from our Executive Board, scored very highly with the review panel. Newcastle University will partner with Huddersfield University to lead the Rolling Stock Innovations Centre, as part of the RSG Centres of Excellence scheme.
June saw the opening of the 57km long Gotthard Base railway tunnel, in Switzerland – the world’s longest and deepest traffic tunnel and the first flat, low-level route through the Alps. The main purpose of the tunnel is to increase local transport capacity through the Alpine barrier, notably on the Rotterdam-Basel-Genoa corridor and, more particularly, to shift freight volumes from road to rail. NewRail’s Roberto Palacin was interviewed by Le Figaro about the benefits of the new construction: see his interview here
With her research on Subway Climatology, ZI Qian took the top prize in the RAIL category at TRA Visions 2016, in Warsaw. The competition was for Academic students researching Innovative Transport Concepts. Zi's work looks at how air moves between different regions in subway systems, between tunnels and overground, and considers how smoke or a chemical agent might spread throughout the system, in the event of accident or terrorist attack, simulating optimum emergency evacuation routes. Starting from SMARTSET achievements and with input from other experts, experiences on efficient Urban Freight Transport were presented and discussed at the conference that brought together policy makers, knowledge carriers and cities, from across Europe, implementing sustainable city logistics measures or planning to do so. Apart from presentations regarding EU-perspective on the future, and other insights regarding access regulations, incentives, and favourable framework conditions for sustainable Urban Freight Transport and business models, the conference provided a lot of space for networking and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. All presentations are now available on the SMARTSET website for download.
SETRIS’s overall aim is to deliver a cohesive and coordinated approach to research and innovation strategies for all transport modes in Europe, by enabling the 5 transport related European Technology Platforms (ETPs) to work together. Each ETP has its own strategic research and innovation agenda (SRIA) and each is at a different stage of delivery and maturity. Whilst some successful cross-ETP working is already established, SETRIS will provide the key building blocks for tighter cooperation between the ETPs, their members and stakeholders.
