Abstract: The use of smartcards as a new media for ticketing for transport services is commonplace in many countries, including parts of the UK and the United States, and is particularly successful in Asia. However, for a technology that has been in use for more than two decades, the take up of such systems in UK is probably not as widespread as one would expect considering the benefits that can be derived from smartcard-based system and also the apparent commitment of UK government to this media. Smartcard technology and applications are continuously developing. Current research suggests that the device carried will almost certainly get smaller and be cheaper to make, and a natural progression will lead to changes in its appearance. As a result of increased memory capacity and flexibility of use, new applications will almost certainly develop, the result of which will be a dynamic and useful tool that transport services can take advantage of. The purpose of this paper is to consider how smartcards have been used in transport in the UK, by examining some of the case studies. It will also consider the forthcoming developments and how these could improve transport services and efficiency.
