				ZDNet: Computing Science Project Tackles Processor Power Challenge</title>
				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/zdnet-computer-science-project-tackles-processor-power-challenge</link>
				<description>

				 Reported in ZdNet yesterday (21st May) are the challenges of cramming more cores onto processors and the energy constraints that restrict their use. In particular, energy efficiency doesn&amp;#39;t scale with the number of cores stacked onto chips. As more cores are added, power consumption grows faster than performance. The solution may come from the recently awarded PRiME project which includes a team of researchers from Computing Science at Newcastle:

				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/bbc-interview-with-martin-emms-about-contactless-card-payment-glitches</link>
				<description>

				 Reported today (18th May) on the BBC website, Marks &amp;amp; Spencer have equipped their tills with not just card readers but with dual function Verifone 820 card readers. They accept contactless cards in the same terminal as normal Chip and PIN transactions. But who decides which card is used to pay&#63; The customer - or the terminal&#63; Many listeners tell us the machine takes the payment from a random contactless card in their wallet before they put their chosen card into the machine. Martin Emms , a researcher into new payment formats at Newcastle Universities&amp;#39; Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security has also replicated this glitch with his own payment cards and is interviewed by the BBC about the issue.

				<description>
				 The W3C PROV specification for modelling provenance metadata ;
				Provenance, a form of structured metadata designed to record the origin or source of information, can be instrumental in deciding whether information is to be trusted, how it can be integrated with other diverse information sources, and how to establish attribution of information to authors throughout its history. The PROV set of specifications, produced by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), is designed to promote the publication of provenance information on the Web, and offers a basis for interoperability across diverse provenance management systems. The PROV provenance model is deliberately generic and domain-agnostic, but extension mechanisms are available and can be exploited for modelling specific domains. This tutorial provides an overview of the main concepts in the model.

				Design of Future Integrated Systems: A Cyber-physical Systems Approach</title>
				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/design-of-future-integrated-systems-a-cyber-physical-systems-approach</link>
				<description>

				In this talk, we address some fundamental issues related to the modeling and optimization of power and performance of next generation of integrated systems while taking a cyber-physical approach. As such, the focus of the design methodology is not only on establishing an efficient communication between the computational elements, but also on including time, communication, and feedback-based control as intrinsic components of the programming model; this goal allows us generalize the classical computational paradigm such that more direct interaction between the cyber-system and physical world becomes possible.

				<description>

				 I will give an introduction to zero-knowledge proofs with a particular emphasis on non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs, where the proof consists of a single message sent from the prover to the verifier. We have in the last years achieved significant efficiency advances and non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs have grown from being a purely theoretical concept to being efficient enough to be used in practical applications.

				  Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) support and develop a broad range of knowledge-based interactions between universities and colleges and the wider world, which result in economic and social benefit to the UK. The School has received HEIF funding to support a new project recently reported on the School website: &amp;quot;Newcastle receives 6m for fast broadband&amp;quot;; Newcastle is receiving 6m to build city-wide networks, offering homes and businesses speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabits per second). Follow this link to read more about the fast broadband project.

				 Culture Lab Kitchen Talk ;
				 This talk will be of interest to computer scientists, clinicians, medical physicists and to patients. It exposes and addresses the culture that leads to persistent substandard systems, and introduces an approach (blending human factors and computer science) that can be used to improve design, for healthcare in particular, but also for any other critical area. In our labs, we can reduce wrong dose errors by factors of ten.

				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/investigating-pretty-good-privacy</link>
				<description>

				In this talk, we consider how Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) works and demonstrate that while the encrypted payload might be secure in a mathematical sense, there are other modes of analysis which exploit weaknesses in PGP, and how it is used, to provide insight into communications, conversation, and payload. The talk will draw on real-life investigative experience in a high profile case in Australia...

				Two refinement-based approaches to verifying linearisability</title>
				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/two-refinement-based-approaches-to-verifying-linearisability</link>
				<description>

				Linearisability is the key correctness criterion for concurrent implementations of data structures shared by multiple processes. In this talk we present a proof of linearisability of the lazy implementation of a set due to Heller et al. The lazy set presents one of the most challenging issues in verifying linearisability: a linearisation point of an operation set by a process other than the one executing it...

				On the changing role of data in embedded systems and systems of systems: challenges for modelling and analysis</title>
				<link>http://www.ncl.ac.uk/computing/about/news/item/on-the-changing-role-of-data-in-embedded-systems-and-systems-of-systems-challenges-for-modelling-and-analysis</link>
				<description>

				Over the last decade we have witnessed an increasing use of data measurements and data processing in embedded systems. Where in the past the data processing was limited, if present at all, to the handling of a small number of &amp;quot;on-off control signals&amp;quot;, more recently much more complex sensory data is being captured, processed and used to improve system performance and dependability...
