The Beehive, Newcastle University
24-25 August 2009

The purpose of the Approaches to Ancient Medicine meetings is to provide a multi-disciplinary international forum for scholarly exchange in the ever growing field of ancient medicine. The 2009 meeting is part of the very successful series of meetings that was initiated in Newcastle in 2000 and continued on an annual/biennial basis in co-operation with Reading (Prof. Helen King).

The particular appeal of the “Approaches” conferences lies in their openness, their cross-disciplinary nature and their informal, small-scale style. There is no specific theme, and contributions from a great variety of disciplines are welcomed. There is a good mix of established scholars and younger scholars.

The programme for 2009 features speakers from the UK, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, France and the Netherlands. There will also be an opportunity for PhD and Masters students to present a poster about their research projects.

This conference is supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Classical Association and the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne School of Historical Studies.
