Title: ‘Biology and British Origins: A Historical Perspective’

Abstract: The use of biological evidence in the investigation of origins of the people of the British Isles has a 150-year history. Interpretations of the evidence have been heavily influenced by received wisdom--traditional or folkloric--and wider socio-political issues. Whilst scientific studies have become increasingly advanced, and have at least achieved a conceptual separation of biology and culture in most peoples minds, they still rely on a traditional archaeological-historical framework within which to develop and test hypotheses.
