Title: ‘Ethnicity, Group Identity, and Social Status in the Early Middle Ages’

Abstract: Historians have concentrated in recent years on the cultural aspects of early medieval ethnicity, emphasizing the constructed nature of identity and its connections to social relations within groups. This paper seeks to introduce these themes and suggest ways in which a genetics based approach might interact with them.
