Workshop - Why Love Shakespeare? Reading the Sonnets

Saturday 3rd September 2005, 2.00-4.00pm, Bedson Teaching Centre LG37

with William Sutton

The main criteria for the Sonnets is literary; not political or psychological. However drama is conflict and conflict needs actors. The words are the actors in lyric verse.

This workshop will explore two sonnets exemplifying wholly masculine and feminine iambic pentameter verse lines: 150 + 87. We will work from a point of view of words, ideas and sound as expressed in the phrasing from the Quarto of 1609.
The goal is to take these words and their 140 + 154 sound units and make them live, 'where breath most breathes, even in the mouths of (wo)men.'

Sonnets will be provided.
