Welcome to the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR)

NICR is the focus of research excellence in cancer studies at Newcastle University.

A Centre of excellence for translational cancer research within the North East region, demonstrating academic excellence on a global platform and providing access to state of the art cancer treatments to people within the region.

The vision of NICR is to improve the understanding and management of cancer and leukaemia in the North East by

  • Developing personalised/tailored medicines for adult and paediatric, solid and haematological, malignancies
  • Promoting collaboration between all parties involved in cancer research and cancer service provision in the region
  • Enhancing the standing of Newcastle as a Centre of Excellence in translational Cancer Research

Our institute is at the heart of the Newcastle Cancer Centre (founded in 2009), which represents a unique collaboration between two charities: Cancer Research UK,and the North of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Newcastle University and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
