Newcastle Cancer Centre at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research

Launched in July 2009, the Newcastle Cancer Centre at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR) is a collaboration between Cancer Research UKNorth of England Children’s Cancer Research Fund, Newcastle University and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The vision of the Centre is:

“To provide the people of the North East of England with access to state-of-the-art cancer treatments and information by undertaking world class translational cancer research in a centre of excellence in partnership with local and national stakeholders.”

By promoting collaboration between scientists, doctors, nurses and funding organisations, the Centre aims to speed the delivery of new therapies and improve cancer services in the area.

NICR is at the heart of the Newcastle Cancer Centre and has a strong track record in developing and testing new treatments. Work at the Centre will boost this activity, helping to take bright ideas from the lab to patients faster than ever before.

The Centres Initiative has been driven nationally by Cancer Research UK and represents one of the charity’s highest strategic priorities. Centres are not new buildings but instead are partnerships working on a local level with other charities, universities, cancer networks and NHS Trust(s), and on a national level with government and industry.

There are now 17 CRUK Cancer Centres in the UK delivering world-class research, improved patient care and greater local engagement.

“As research into cancer relies a great deal on the generosity of the public to help fund it, communicating different aspects of the Centre's research portfolio to its varied supporters is of fundamental importance”

Local Engagement and Development (LEAD)

Local engagement forms a very important part of the Centres Initiative. Each Centre has a Local Engagement Manager, funded by Cancer Research UK, based within it and it is their role to increase understanding and awareness of the groundbreaking work being carried out by the Centres Research Team and the impact this is having on the fight against cancer at a local level.
