Clinical Cancer Research

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust delivers world class clinical research

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has the delivery of world class clinical research embedded within its mission statement, and actively supports clinical research in all disciplines.

Paediatric oncology clinical research is based within the Great North Children’s Hospital where a dedicated clinical trials facility supports both late and early phase trials activity, with the majority of children being offered trial access.

In adult cancer there is a dedicated cancer trials facility within the regional Northern Centre for Cancer Care. The focus of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer trials Research centre is the delivery of novel, translational trials in adult solid tumours and haematology malignancies, and this unit has an international reputation for its first in human trials activity. There is also significant activity in late phase trials and radiotherapy research – with the SPIRIT and QUARTZ being led from Newcastle.

Areas of clinical research strength include prostate, colorectal, lung and gynaecological cancers, hepatocellular cancer, and childhood cancers.
