On Friday 14th May 2010 Newcastle University Business School welcomed back one of its highly successful graduates, Christopher Parsons who is currently working as Vice President – International for sports giant the NFL (National Football League) based in New York, USA.
Chris studied BA Economics and Business Management at the Business School and graduated in 1995. After graduation Chris secured a role in a graduate management trainee scheme with BASS breweries working in the dynamic area of Sales and Marketing. His career quickly developed in international marketing as did his knowledge and skill base and it wasn’t long before Chris was headhunted into his current position at the NFL, which utilises his ultimate passion for the NFL – a perfect job match!
Chris’s visit to the School was met with real excitement and interest by staff, students and journalists alike. As part of his full day with us Chris kindly offered his time to meet with key members of staff within the University and offer his expertise, thoughts and opinions on a variety of issues pertinent to an aspiring ‘world class’ Business School.
Tristan Alltimes, Alumni Relations Manager organised Chris’s itinerary and escorted him around campus for the day and commented:
“I first met Chris last April on a visit to New York and was very excited at the prospect of one day getting Chris back to the School to share some of his fond memories and impressive expertise and experience with our students and alumni. Chris’s personal career journey is one of true inspiration and I know many of our current students will be inspired to follow in his footsteps to achieve their dream roles just like Chris has managed to do working for a huge brand like the NFL”.
As part of his visit Chris presented to a group of students and staff about how to globalise a business, using the NFL as a fascinating and exciting case study. During this session Chris shared his expertise on how you can take a brand like the NFL and export it across the world successfully. The session was a huge success and questions were coming in thick and fast from the audience during the Q&A. Some NFL merchandise was also flown in especially for the session, which the students were keen to get their hands on as part of a memento of the afternoon.
At the end of the day Chris met with the University’s very own American Football Team ‘Newcastle Raiders’ which proved to be a very newsworthy story making it onto prime time TV slot North East Tonight, which aired at 6.20pm on Friday 14th May.
Coach Ben Johnson (also a Business School graduate) of the Newcastle Raiders said:
“It was an absolute pleasure meeting Chris and all the lads were particularly excited in anticipation of his visit. We were very thankful for having the opportunity to speak to Chris about the current issues facing the team in respects of both funding and the sport not currently being highly recognised in this country, something we know we could work with Chris to improve. We hope following on from our discussions that together we can work to increase the importance of the sport especially in the University league structure (British Universities and Colleges Sport - BUCS) and ultimately help raise awareness and interest in the sport moving forward for the future”.
As part of the session with the Newcastle Raiders, which involved the filming for the Tyne Tees slot and a Q&A session afterwards, Chris was made an Honorary Old boy of the team, giving him priveliged status and recognition to the team. The team awarded Chris with his very own Raiders jersey with his name printed proudly across the back and a commerative plaque to cement his place in their history books.
Chris’s visit to the Business School and University is part of his intention to ‘give a little something back’ to the School where he has such fond memories. Chris acknowledges the part the School has played in assisting him to achieve his career aspirations and realising his true potential and is very keen to engage with the School and University to assist in helping it to also realise its true potential as a world class Business School.
The Business School, University and the Newcastle Raiders are all very thankful to Chris for the time he spent at the University and are very much looking forward to welcoming him back over the coming year to help progress the NFL’s agenda in the UK, as well as listening to and learning more from the fascinating role Chris holds at the NFL.
