photograph Leading Entrepreneurs Help Startups in the Region

The latest Leadership Event, 'Leading a Startup in the North East: Lessons Learned', hosted by Newcastle University Business School on Tuesday 27 April 2010, saw North East businesses and students getting first-hand advice and experiences from two local entrepreneurs.

Will Dracup, Newcastle University Business School’s current David Goldman Visiting Professor of Business Innovation and founder of science technology company Nonlinear Dynamics, was joined by Jon Riley, Technical Director, of 3D image browsing software developers See-Fish Technologies and they discussed the lessons they have learnt when starting and growing their respective businesses.

Dr Janine Swail, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship from the Business School hosted an ‘in conversation’ discussion, looking at the defining moments of new businesses.  The discussions also explored the logistics of starting a business, ranging from securing financial capital to finding employees and the practicalities of turning an initial idea into a profitable business.

In addition, Will and Jon spoke about the challenges and pitfalls they have faced throughout their careers and provided advice on growing a business both in the North East and on an international scale.

Will Dracup, Nonlinear Dynamics said:  “As the 2010 David Goldman Visiting Professor of Business Innovation at Newcastle University Business School I really enjoyed taking part in the School’s latest Leadership Event – Jon and I offered advice to our region’s budding entrepreneurs on all aspects of business, from the highs and lows faced by business start ups, to how to turn their ideas into a reality right up to strategic partnerships.”

The discussion was the first of three Leadership Series events planned for 2010, which will cover topics including entrepreneurship and business leadership.  Since Will Dracup was announced as the seventh David Goldman Visiting Professor of Business Innovation at Newcastle University Business School he has successfully presented the prestigious annual David Goldman Business School lecture and will undertake a range of other activities with the Business School during the 12 month professorship.
