Professors, Entrepreneurs, Local Heroes and a Lord, meet to Debate the Future of the North EastInternationally renowned author and academic Professor Scott Shane, on his first visit to Newcastle as Visiting International Distinguished Scholar at Newcastle University Business School, played a key role in the launch event of a publication commissioned by the Talent and Enterprise Taskforce on Friday 23rd October 2009.
The ‘FutureStory Newcastle and the North East’ publication celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and industrial skills that characterise the region. At the event at the Discovery Museum, Professor Shane outlined his theory on the costly myths entrepreneurs, investors and policy makers live by. A key note speech was delivered by Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Skills and Innovation on the need to ensure the region’s success in an increasingly competitive global economy. A lively panel discussion followed with some of the ‘Local Heroes’ who feature in the publication and who bring to life what it takes to succeed on the global stage.
Speaking of the event Professor Shane said: "This event is important because it is indicative of the Newcastle and the North East’s commitment to focusing its attention on building high potential, high growth companies, rather than just efforts to have a high number of entrepreneurs"
Pro Vice Chancellor for Engagement Professor Paul Younger said that "The launch of 'FutureStory Newcastle and the North East' has been a fantastic opportunity to celebrate some true local heroes and debate the challenges and opportunities for our region. Newcastle University looks forward to driving that debate forward and playing a part in many future success stories."
Commenting on the FutureStory launch, Director of Newcastle University Business School, Professor Ian Clarke said: “Newcastle University Business School has a sound reputation for engaging with business and our David Goldman Visiting Professor of Business Innovation (currently held by Dr Tony Trapp) is a prime example of the way we can harness the expertise and vision of high quality entrepreneurs.
“A key part of our role is to understand the opportunities and risks within business creation and through rigorous examination better appreciate the key factors that determine success, longevity and wealth creation. Visiting Distinguished International Scholar Professor Scott Shane from Case Western Reserve University, Ohio, will, during his two year tenure with Newcastle University Business School reinforce and extend our mission to be at the forefront of understanding business policy and practice”
