Current David Goldman Visiting Professor of Innovation and Enterprise

The 2012 David Goldman Visiting Professor of Innovation & Enterprise is James Timpson OBE, Chief Executive of Timpson.

James TimpsonJames takes over from Tom Maxfield, who was sales director for Sage Group from 1984 until 1997, and has worked tirelessly with the Business School since his appointment.   

James Timpson is the Chief Executive of Timpson, a family retail business based in Manchester.

Timpson is the largest shoe repairer, key cutter, engraver and watch repairer, with over 800 shops across the UK and Ireland. James has worked in all areas of the business, from branch manager to area manager, until joining the Timpson House team. The Timpson family has recently added the Max Spielmann business, consisting of 200 photo processing stores, to their impressive business portfolio. 

Timpson is well known as being a great place to work and has recently purchased a seaside hotel to increase the number of holiday homes for colleagues.

In 2001 the Goldman family made an endowment to Newcastle University Business School to commemorate the life and work of David Goldman, co-founder and Chief Executive of the North East’s iconic software company, the Sage Group plc. David had played a leading role in transforming the economic fortunes of the North East region.

The Goldman Endowment has enabled the School to establish two positions, both designed to stimulate enterprise and foster innovation within the North East of England.

On Monday March 19th 2012 Tom presented his  inaugural lecture to an audience that included members of David Goldman’s family and friends and was open to all to attend.
