Meet our Placement Officer

Nicola BurnipName: Nicola Burnip

What do you do within the School?

I am responsible for the overall management of undergraduate placements. Working with the Marketing and Development team, my role includes developing a network of employers to create placement opportunities for our students.

I am a key contact for employers, visiting companies where necessary and discussing the benefits of taking on an undergraduate student.

I advertise the vacancies and ensure students are informed of each opportunity. I also administratively monitor and evaluate the placements, keeping in touch with students and their host company throughout the placement period ensuring all appropriate documentation is completed.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I am passionate about undergraduate placements, and I genuinely enjoy all aspects of my role. There has never been a dedicated Placement Officer in the Business School prior to me joining, so I have been given the scope to shape and develop the role, drawing upon past experience and knowledge to do this.

It is very varied as I get to deal with companies, students, academics, other professional staff within the Business School and the careers service. I find it rewarding to work in a role where you are helping student’s access placement opportunities and hearing about their progress and their achievements once on placement is very satisfying.

What advice could you give to our students here at the Business School?

I would advise that all students work hard to achieve the best possible learning experience and to find the right balance between studying and socialising!

I would also advise students to seriously consider undertaking a placement if they have the opportunity to do so. Any commercial work experience can make you a much more attractive proposition to employers and can give your CV a competitive edge when you graduate.

If you could sum yourself up in 3 words what would they be?

Considerate, friendly, helpful.
