Academic Prizes

The Business School recognizes that exceptional talent and achievement should not go unnoticed and should be celebrated to encourage students to strive for excellence and personal satisfaction. With this in mind, each year, prizes sponsored by local companies and the Business School are awarded to students at all stages of their studies to commend dedication.

The Class of 2010 and the Prizes Awarded at the 2010 Graduation Ceromonies

In July 2010 the Business School celebrated the achievements of its esteemed 2010 batch of undergraduate students at an impressive gala ceremony in the Lindisfarne Room in Kings Road Centre on campus.

Sponsored by some of the country’s best employers including: Accenture, Aldi, Kantar World Panel and Teach First, a lovely and enjoyable day was experienced by all.

A proud day, and a proud moment - for all of the Business School's students, family, friends and staff membersThe Business School reception was the first of its kind for the School and was a great display of achievement on what was a very proud day for our graduates, family, friends and members of staff from the School. Guests were welcomed with a glass of champagne complimented by delicious strawberries and cream.

Director of Learning, Teaching and the Student Experience, Rob Jones, welcomed the some 500+ graduates and guests on the day with a speech, which highlighted how the graduates of 2010 are expected to be more technology savvy, be masters of research and have cutting edge business skills to survive in an ever changing and dynamic business world.

Throughout the course of the day the School hosted the graduating students during special receptions.

During the first reception the School celebrated with the 100+ Business Management graduates specifically awarding Jessica Hoegel with a Best Graduating Student on the BA Hons Business Management and Andrei Bumbacea for Outstanding performance in the final year on the BA Business Management programme. Both students were presented with their awards by the Degree Programme Director Shelagh Cauwood and Michael Hill from Accenture who kindly supported the Business Management category offering cash prizes to both winning students.

Congratulations also go to Harriet Greenwood and Michael Lawrence for winning the Best Major Group Projectfrom BA Hons Business Management, BA Hons Marketing and Management or BSc Marketing programmes.

The second reception of the day for all BA Hons Marketing and Management graduates was particularly busy with some 150 people in attendance.

Congratulations go to Rachel Brown who won the Best Graduating Student and Georgia Carrano who won the award for Outstanding Performance in the Final Year on the BA Hons Marketing and Management programme. Both categories were kindly sponsored by ALDI and Liam Rafferty - Regional Area Manager awarded cash prizes to both winning students who were delighted with their achievements.

Degree Programme Director Stuart Challinor gave a very fitting speech to introduce the prizes (including embarrassing some of the students with personal stories) and also highlighted how he was particularly happy that ALDI were sponsoring the category.

Congratulations also go to Aneka Hindocha, Jill Knowles, Chris Morton and David Young who won the Best Major Group Project on the BA Hons Marketing and Management programme. Additionally congratulations to Mark Harbottle and Laura Percival for winning the David Lesser Prize and Huge Zhang who won the Transition Prize for Henan students.

The penultimate session was hosted for Economics and BSc Marketing graduates and again another busy reception ensued. Degree Programme Director for BSc Marketing Mary Brennan gave a very fitting and proud speech about the fantastic achievements of the students to kick off the reception, which truly highlighted the personal relationships that our academics have with their students.

Congratulations go to Fabio Mann for winning Best Final Year student in Economics and James Watt for Best Individual Piece of Work in Economics. Francis Kiraly, Degree Programme Director gave a congratulatory speech for the Economics students and awarded the prizes which were kindly sponsored by Kantar World Panel whom were unable to be in attendance on the day but still awarded cash prizes for winning students - many thanks go to Kantar for their continued support.

The final reception of the day for BA Hons Accounting and Finance, Economics and Business Management and Financial and Business Economics completed a fantastic day of celebrations.

Degree Programme Director for Accounting and Finance Josie McLaren was very proud to give an introductory speech to the reception, which congratulated all of the students on their achievements throughout the year, culminating in the days celebrations.

Congratulations go to Anna Perkins for winning the Best Final Examination Performance in Accounting Papers, kindly sponsored by Teach First and Claire Marshall from Teach First awarding a cash prize to Anna on the day.

Congratulations also to Freda Kocholla who won the award for Best Final Examination Performance in Taxation in Accounting kindly sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Taxation and Tom Young from the Institute awarding Freda’s prize on the day.

Transition prize for Xiamen students which went to Tianshu Lai.

Certificates of Commendation which went to Shuang Liang and Jing Xu.

Rob Jones commented: “Our congratulations go to each and every one of our graduates and I wish them the very best for the future.  Many of them have already secured graduate positions with employers underlining their high levels of ability.  Graduation is a very personal experience for each one of our graduates, their family and friends.  All the staff at the Business School are very proud of the achievements of our new graduates and my colleagues and I were delighted to share in today’s celebration of their success.” 

The Business School wishes to thank our graduates, family, friends, corporate supporters and members of staff for their involvement in what turned out to be a wonderful day made possible by everyone involved.

Partner Transition Prizes

Xinyao Huang shows off her certificateIn addition to programmes awarded for special achievement on each degree programme the Business School has recently launched the Partner Transition Prize. This prize aims to showcase excellence of students from our partner institutions in integrating and contributing to university and Newcastle life. It takes into account factors such as overall academic performance, participation in School activities and integration with students from other countries.

The first prizes were awarded in September 2009 to Shuangshuang Shi and Xinyao Huang, both from one of our partner institutions, Xiamen University Tan Keh College China. Both students have recently graduated with a 2.1 honours degree in Financial and Business Economics after studying here for two years.
