Programme Studied: MSc International Economics & Finance
Year of Graduation: 2008
Current Job Title: Trainee Investment Manager
Current Company: Brewin Dolphin
After graduating during the financial crisis, opportunities were limited so I decided to temp for a while to gain experience and get my foot in some doors. Some of the places I worked included a call centre, a government office and a couple of accounts departments before taking up my role at Brewin Dolphin.
At the Newcastle office of Investment Manager Brewin Dolphin, I am a member of the Newcastle Asset Management Team. My role is assisting with investment management, reviewing portfolios, advising and dealing for private clients, charities and pension funds including some of the North East's largest charities and companies.
The Newcastle Asset Management team is part of Brewin Dolphin's larger Charity Team, made up of 6 centres of charity fund management expertise based in Newcastle, Cardiff, London, Leeds, Exeter and Edinburgh, managing total funds in excess of £1.8bn.
Brewin Dolphin invests across a wide spectrum of financial instruments, including UK and overseas equities, gilts, bonds, unit trusts, investment trusts and commodities through ETFs and structured products.
A typical day involves watching the stock markets, looking for opportunities, developing new business connections, meeting fund managers and providing support to my team members.
Just a really enjoyable time, with really good people! The course was incredibly challenging but this meant I felt very satisfied when I finished it!
