Brief description of career since graduating…


I joined the John Lewis Graduate training programme in 1996. I worked my way through various management positions in seven John Lewis department stores in various parts of the country and two Head Office roles in London. I moved back to Newcastle to become MD of John Lewis in Eldon Square in 2008 and have recently moved onto MD at John Lewis Edinburgh.

Your current role: What are your responsibilities, what is a typical day like, what are the highs and lows of the job?

Barry has only recently moved to Edinburgh role so this answer is relevant from the Newcastle role.

I manage a full line John Lewis department store with 750 Partners. My role is to maximise sales and control costs in order to deliver our budget profit. I am also responsible for creating a great place for our Partners to work and an outstanding environment for our customers to shop. I enjoy working with people and no one day is ever the same. I undertake a lot of work in the city and I sit on the Business Improvement Company Board and the Board of Newcastle Gateshead Initiative. I chair the Merchant’s Association for Eldon Square and I am a member of the North East Regional Leadership team for Business in the Community.

What are your main memories of your time at the Business School?


I have many fond memories of studying at the Business School. I was active in lots of university societies including taking over the reins of the Curry Society and organising events for TEAMS - The Economics, Accounting and Management Society. I made some great friends, a number of which I am still in contact with today.
