Brief description of career since graduating…

Since graduating, L’Oreal allowed me to travel for 4 months before starting my position on their graduate trainee programme which lasts for one year. On the graduate scheme there are 3 rotations in the year and so currently I have started working in Market Research for key brands Maybelline New York, L’Oreal Paris and Garnier on skincare, cosmetics, deodorants, mens and suncare.

Your current role: What are your responsibilities, what is a typical day like, what are the highs and lows of the job?

As I am fairly new to the role, there has been a lot to learn quickly. The market research team at L’Oreal work with brand managers from the different brands in order to come up with ways of testing new concepts, ideas, compare different advertising ideas etc whilst trying to understand and focus on consumers needs and wants. Recently there has been a major internal meeting resulting in having to manage approx 15 projects in the space of just several weeks for the various different brands.

I work very closely with agencies who conduct different tests for us and sometimes go along to view focus groups for example (very interesting to see firsthand what groups of consumers say about new ideas, current products, competitors etc). A typical day is fairly hectic with so many projects ongoing and at different stages requiring different levels of attention and thus organisation skills are hugely important.

The highs are the satisfaction when you see a project from start to finish, and recently having carried out a test for Maybelline, the results of our test resulted in a new campaign changing to suit the wants of consumers which we had found out. Speaking with so many people around the company and with agencies is also very exciting and recently I have found that no day is the same. I also enjoy the confidentiality aspect of the job whereby often the projects are top secret and only my manager and I, for example will know about them...

The downsides are the pressure and amount of time often spent in the office!

What are your main memories of your time at the Business School?

My main memories of my time at the Business School were of making lots of friends, working with many different people and working on completely different things all the time. I also took part in some presentations for the programme director and in some discussions with the board giving a student’s perspective, again things which stand out. I also think of how useful the career service once when I initially started looking at jobs before I undertook my placement year.
