Brief description of career since graduating…

During my third year I completed the Hewlett-Packard Marketing internship scheme where I coordinated the HP Services communications channels within EMEA. I was responsible for the main e-learning forum for all employees across the region and other communications channels. I also managed events on behalf of HP such as the Gartner Data Centre Summit and also the Gartner Outsourcing Services Summit. This stood me in good stead for my return to Newcastle where I was able to use my experiences to gain a 2.1 in Marketing.

Since graduating in 2009, I have moved into the public sector, working in the Marketing team of the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) (the government agency responsible for the training and development of the school workforce). I have supported several Ministerial policy changes; the school’s Whitepaper, general election, Purdah and also managed the campaign to encourage Armed Service leavers into teaching.

Your current role: What are your responsibilities, what is a typical day like, what are the highs and lows of the job?

I'm currently on an 18 month secondment to the Department for Culture Media and Sport in the London 2012 Government Olympic Executive. The GOE is the section within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) which oversees the London 2012 project on behalf of the Government, ensuring that it is delivered on time, within budget, represents value for public money and benefits the whole of the UK. This is done across the project by identifying and solving problems, delivering the public sector effort and being accountable to Parliament and the public.

I'm working with key stakeholders across the London 2012 family on a daily basis and also colleagues across Whitehall to make sure that knowledge is flowing between each partner and communications are delivered in a timely and effective manner. I manage a stakeholder newsletter which services Civil Servants working on the Games and I also manage cross government steering groups with heads of communications from DEfRA, DfE, HO, FCO and UKTI to name but a few. I'm coordinating GOE's quarterly report on behalf of Ministers, which reflects the spending of the Games and also the legacy benefits London 2012 will bring to the whole of the UK such as more sports for schools and cultural events. It's a big project as we have to work around ministers, make sure the Olympic Delivery Authority have their say on how the 'Big Build' is going and also make sure that we're as transparent as possible. It's final stop will be the House of Commons, so there's no pressure...

As the government's official voice for London 2012, we're also developing a communications toolkit for communicators across government to use when dealing with media enquiries and we're also working on a campaign with Number 10 to promote investment into the UK following the Game. No two days are the same at the moment especially in the run up to Games time where I will be base in the Mayor's office in the Digital team where I will be monitoring the 'chatter' around the Games and channelling information to encourage the flow of accurate Games knowledge and working closely with the press team.

There's so much excitement around the Olympic and Paralympic Games and I'm very lucky to have a chance to be a part of it. It's invaluable experience for a career in the Civil Service or for a marketing communications career in the private sector.

What are your main memories of your time at the Business School?

Graduation when everyone was relieved all their hard work had paid off.
