To develop a critical understanding of and the ability to rigorously apply theories, practices and concepts that relate to art and enterprise by examining cutting edge entrepreneurial and freelance practice in the creative sector in the UK.
This module provides a detailed introduction to art and enterprise by covering the key issues that practitioners face when working as an independent in the cultural sector. These include planning and resourcing (including fundraising and financial management), marketing and promotion, developing and using professional networks, creating and responding to opportunities. Examples of best practice in the UK and internationally will be used to highlight the different concepts and approaches in the cultural sector.
Original Summary:
This module will introduce a variety of key issues and practices related to developing and sustaining a position as an independent producer/practitioner in the cultural sector (ie freelance individual or small independent organisation). It will use actual models of practice and project based assignments to examine how successful projects are initiated, developed and realised.
Lectures = To introduce and develop key theories and methodologies
Seminars = To encourage interaction and the development of cognitive, key and professional skills
Practicals = To develop subject-specific, professional and cognitive skills
Private study = To further facilitate specific intended knowledge outcomes, and to develop both cognitive and practical key skills
Fieldwork study visits = To encourage students to relate theoretical knowledge to specific examples thereby developing professional and cognitive skills as well as expanding their knowledge base
Group learning: (project) = To provide opportunities for students in teams to obtain hands-on experience in employing theories and skills learnt

In this module there is a substantial content in terms of developing a practical project as a group and substantial content in terms of developing, individually and collectively, critically understanding of practice and the identification and development of skills.
The presentation format will assess and give feedback on the development of group projects and individual students performance within them. The report format of assessment will help the students to reflect on this project business plan (produced by the group) in a way that will help them engage with the intended knowledge outcomes and will also provide them with usefull skills in report writing and busines planning for later carreer development.
