Doctoral Programmes

A lively discussionThe mission of our doctoral programmes is to develop rigorous scholars who can advance both academic knowledge and business practice. The programmes are designed to equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in a knowledge-intensive environment and to open greater depth to their professional and personal lives.

We offer PhD and MPhil degrees within a wide range of research areas. The school is now part of the North East Doctoral Training Centre (DTC), which is funded and accredited by the ESRC and run jointly by the universities of Newcastle and Durham. This is a collaborative centre for world-class postgraduate research and training in the social sciences, which offers students a wealth of opportunities to work with leading researchers across a wide range of disciplines and benefit from high-quality training and state-of-the-art resources at both universities. There are two pathways that the school offers: Economics and Finance and Management and Business Studies.

We also offer part-time Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) as a professional practice research degree, run jointly with Grenoble Ecole de Management. It offers an unique opportunity to study and receive degrees from two esteemed institutions. It is designed for experienced professionals, who wish to further their personal and career development and make a contribution to management practice without interrupting their current work commitments. Our DBA has Professional Doctorate recognition from the ESRC, one of only five such programmes to have received this.

In recognition of the quality of our doctoral provision, we are a member of EDAMBA (European Doctoral Association in Management and Business Administration). EDAMBA is a Europe-wide organization which requires schools to meet certain quality thresholds. Only 13 schools from the UK have been able to meet those requirements.  In addition, Newcastle University Business School has also taken an active role in the Northern Advanced Research Training Initiative (NARTI), a regional consortium of research-led business schools. The network provides advanced research training for doctoral students through a series of specialist workshops and an annual colloquium.
