Student Profile: Wariso Ibifubara

Wariso IbifubaraMSc E-Business and Information Systems

What did you do before you came to Newcastle?
Before coming to Newcastle to study for MSc E-Business and Information Systems, I had a BSc Degree in Mathematics/Statistics and was working for the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, as Desk Officer in charge of the Overseas Scholarship Scheme (MSc).

Why did you choose Newcastle University?
The decision to attend a postgraduate programme at Newcastle University was influenced by my previous visits to the University and the opportunity to take a tour around the state of the art facilities the university has.

Why did you choose E-Business Information Systems (EBIS)?
I chose EBIS because I was interested in exploring the bridge between Information Technology and the Business World. I was interested in studying how IT innovations continue to impact business processes and decisions.

What did you like the most about your degree?
What I liked most about my degree is its rich content, wide coverage and international appeal. The opportunity to carry out a practical consultancy project allowed me the privilege to experience putting the theory I had learned into practice. I also like the fact that most of the Lecturers were very experienced in industry and business knowledge, and often used practical examples to drive home the point.

What do you do now? How's that relevant to your EBIS degree?
I have since returned to my job and have used the skills I’ve acquired to implement an online application system on the scholarship scheme. The relevance of EBIS and what I am doing currently is the use of tools I came in contact with on the programme to offer our customers more choice and access channels to the Fund, while doing the same to enhance internal processes.

Were the knowledge and skills gained useful when looking for a job?
Yes, they were. I now look at activities and innovations from a more strategic point of view.

Would you recommend Newcastle (the city) to your friends?
I’ll recommend Newcastle (the city) for its orderliness, famous landmarks and fabulous sites. For those who are more out-going, I think they’ll get much more than their money’s worth in Newcastle.
