12 months full time

This programme builds on the School's established strengths in economics and finance and has been created in response to the increased growth of the financial services sector. Worldwide growth in the sector has furthered the demand for students with specialist skills and competencies in finance and banking.

Closely related to the School's MSc Banking and Finance programme, the Finance degree features compulsory modules in financial theory and corporate policy and optional specialist banking modules, whereas the Banking and Finance MSc features a greater number of compulsory modules in central, retail and investment banking.

The MSc Finance programme is particularly aimed at those interested in pursuing a career in:

  • investment banking
  • financial research
  • financial trading

The programme is made up of a combination of core and optional modules and candidates may share modules with students on the School's successful MSc International Economics and Finance degree and the School's MSc Banking and Finance degree.

Programme Description - MSc Finance

This is a one year full-time modular programme and begins in mid September with an Induction Week, which all students must attend. The taught component runs over two Semesters and consists of compulsory modules (70 credits) and optional modules (50 credits).

The compulsory modules equip students with the fundamental skills in financial theory and practice, for example, the theory and practice of derivatives pricing. The programme will also provide candidates with the computer and research skills required by employers in this highly competitive sector.

The optional modules on this programme offer students the chance to tailor the structure of their MSc towards certain jobs within the sector. For example, the optional module in Behavioural Finance is of particular relevance to students interested in financial research in the area of asset pricing.

In addition to the taught component of the course, students are required to write a dissertation on a finance topic in the second semester of the programme (60 credits).
