Programme description

The longest established programme of its kind in the UK, Newcastle University Business School’s MA in Human Resource Management (HRM) aims to provide a firm foundation in the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career in this specialist field.

People are central to the success of any organisation. Our aim is to enable you to make an effective contribution as a human resource specialist, always recognising the distinct ethical responsibilities of the human resource practitioner.  Candidates on the full-time programme have the opportunity to undertake a work placement.

The programme has been recently updated following a comprehensive review, our programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and successful completion of the programme leads to graduate membership of this prestigious institute.

The MA in Human Resource Management also aligns with the standards of the American based Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) – the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management.

Who is the programme for?

Available on a full- or part-time basis, the programme is aimed primarily at those who intend to pursue a career in human resource management or who are at the early stages of building their career in this area.  The MA in Human Resource Management compliments our MA in International Human Resource Management – designed for those intending to pursue an international career within this field.

Professional skill development

Candidates are encouraged to develop the critical self-analysis and personal skills that underpin future career development and support the process of lifelong learning.  The emphasis on skill development also helps candidates to meet the professional development requirements of the CIPD.

Dissertation

Work begins on the dissertation for full time students at the start of semester two. Dissertations are completed by the beginning of September. Part time students begin the dissertation in the second year.

Student profile

Nisha Rehan, UK

‘The reputation of Newcastle University persuaded me to carry out the MA here. I found out that employment rates are good for graduates and in particular relation to my course, we were offered the highly recommended CIPD qualification which I feel is so important...I like the placement opportunity we are given and the idea that we will devise practical solutions to a real-life problem in the workplace. The teaching methods vary with each member of staff which helps to make the theories more interesting. Parts of the lectures are normally focused on discussion which enables people to share relevant work experience.’

Entry Requirements

Candidates are required to hold a minimum upper second class first degree (2:1) or overseas equivalent.  Every application is considered on an individual basis and candidates who narrowly miss the academic entry criteria may be eligible for admission at the discretion of the selector.
