A Chartered Mechanical and Marine Engineer by background, Dr Fowler has held industrial, academic and consulting positions in operations management including design & development, manufacturing and systems-maintenance. His principal research interests focus on the strategic dimensions of operations and information systems management and reflect a long-standing interest in dynamic modelling and simulation.
He has BSc. and MSc. degrees in Engineering from Edinburgh and Newcastle Universities respectively, a PhD. also in Engineering from Newcastle University and an MBA from Durham University. Previous experience includes eight years employment as an engineer/manager in a range of manufacturing and service industries and twelve years as lecturer in Marine Engineering.

Dynamic modelling and simulation of complex adaptive-systems, business process analysis, benchmarking, product and process design, knowledge management and the strategic role of information systems. Current and previous research projects include project management of information systems for universities, business process design and knowledge management applications in private and public sector organisations, lean-supply spares procurement systems., development of underwater power systems, simulation and design of marine propulsion systems for merchant vessels and warships.

Winner of the Literati prize for excellence, International Journal of Operations and Management, 2001. Twice winner of the Denny Gold Medal, for the best paper presented to the I.Mar.E. Winner of the Percy-Jackson award of the Institution of North-East Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders.
