Background

Prior to taking up the position of Director of the Business School in November 2008, Ian worked for 7 years as Chair in Marketing and Strategic Management at Lancaster University Management School where he was also one of 17 people selected nationally as a Senior Fellow of the UK Advanced Institute of Management Research, funded by EPSRC/ESRC. He has held Chairs in Marketing at a number of other universities, including Durham and Sheffield. Prior to working in academe he spent several years in commerce as a strategic marketing advisor and analyst to the main board of a major UK company (Tesco PLC).

Decision-making, sensemaking and discursive practices in senior management teams; consumer store choice

Current Work

Ian currently has two major projects, undertaken in his period as Senior Fellow of AIM: (1) a comparative study of the sensemaking processes and discursive practices in management teams undertaken in business units within BAE Systems in the UK and Australia and in collaboration with Professor Sally Maitlis (University of British Columbia), Professor Ruth Wodak (Linguistics, Lancaster University) and Dr Winston Kwon (Lancaster University Management School); and (2) a study of the factors affecting consumer perceptions of local retail store choice 'assortments' in collaboration with Professor Harmen Oppewal (Monash University) and Malcolm Kirkup (Birmingham University Business School)

Postgraduate Supervision

Qualitative research on organizational sensemaking and decision-making processes, analysis of discourse within organizations, especially senior management teams.

Esteem Indicators

Based on his AIM research, Ian was an invited specialist advisor to the UK Competition Commission on their investigation of the UK grocery sector (2006)
