Course Outline

This degree is targeted at potential future business leaders. It aims to provide a broad understanding of the relevant principles and practice of business management, preparing you for careers in a wide range of employment sectors including consultancy, media, manufacturing, retail, finance and human resources.

The programme combines theoretical study of contemporary management topics such as organisational behaviour and human resource management with an understanding of the strategic and operational context of businesses.

The programme is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Therefore, on successful completion of this programme, students will be eligible for guaranteed membership of the CMI.

Core management modules throughout the programme equip you with a broad understanding of management theory. This allows you to take full advantage of opportunities for more specialist study at Stages 2 and 3.

A strong emphasis is placed on employability with students undertaking a range of practical assignments, market research and consultancy as well as an optional work placement.

 

Course Content

Stage 1

This Stage delivers an introduction to core management knowledge and skills that are essential for running a successful business. You cover key topics such as:

  • accounting
  • global business environmentsbusiness emergence and growthmanagement theory
  • personal and professional skills development
  • quantitative techniques necessary for modern business decision making

Stage 2

This Stage aims to develop your understanding of issues underlying effective leadership and management: Core modules include:  

  • strategy and operations management
  • managing people in organisations
  • research skills
  • understanding work and organisations
  • business systems

You also take an optional module that allows you to begin to specialise within a particular area of management for example::

  • business enterprise
  • innovation and technology management

You also have the option to study a modern language or foundation business Spanish.  

Work placement/study abroad (optional):

Between Stages 2 and 3, you may choose to undertake a 12-month work placement in a UK or European business or spend the year studying at a partner university in Europe.

The Business School has a dedicated Placement Officer who can help you find a suitable work placement; you can also choose to receive e-mail alerts from the University’s Careers Service Vacancies Online service.

We have recently placed students in companies including Heinz, IBM, Nestlé, Nissan, L’Oréal, Reuters and Xerox.

Stage 3

You continue with advanced modules in management such as advanced strategy and operations, and contemporary issues in international business management.

You then also choose optional modules from a range of specialist topics to enhance your knowledge and employability. Examples include: 

 

  • international human resource management
  • electronic business
  • innovation and creativity
  • understanding enterprise
  • public services management
  • critical organisation studies
  • management and organisation in popular culture

You also complete a dissertation or consultancy project in an area of your choice, which accounts for a third of your marks at Stage 3.

The 12,000-word dissertation provides the opportunity for in-depth research, in a management related subject of your choice.

Alternatively, the consultancy project allows you to experience a real-life business scenario, working with a client to research and present recommendations.
