This programme emphasizes those aspects of economics which relate to the analysis of financial markets and business decisions. We aim to provide you with a thorough grounding in the concepts and analytical apparatus of economics, with particular emphasis on those parts of the subject which relate to the financial and business sectors.
In addition, we aim to equip you with a range of general transferable skills, such as communication and interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem solving and computer skills, which will be of use to you beyond your degree studies and which will be highly regarded by future employers.
The Financial and Business Economics degree programme at Newcastle University is currently a market leader, with graduates of the programme going on to secure employment in a wide range of roles with employers including regional, national and international organizations, across many sectors .
At Stage 1 key modules give you an awareness and understanding of the principles of accounting, the form and structure of business organizations, and current economic problems. Further modules introduce you to a variety of information technology and quantitative skills that will be of use both within and beyond your degree.
Stage 2 modules in micro-, macro- and empirical economics, financial control and corporate finance aim to give you a deeper insight into the methods used by economists to understand the workings of the modern economy, and of the relationship between government and the financial and business sectors. Modules in accounting and finance raise your awareness of the financial issues affecting modern business.
Stage 3 develops the skills and knowledge acquired at previous Stages and, through the choice of appropriate optional modules, enables you to apply these to the areas of financial and business economics that are of greatest interest to you. A dissertation at Stage 3 gives you the opportunity to pursue a topic of original research.
