All applications for the Flying Start programme must be submitted via UCAS . You will find details of the application deadlines on the UCAS website. We recommend that you apply early for this programme as it is highly popular and the number of places is limited.
Soon after we receive your UCAS form, it will be reviewed by a member of staff. We then write to selected applicants to ask them to complete a supplementary application form (word file) and invite them to attend an Open Day/ Assessment Centre.
The Open Day/Assessment Centres are held from December to March and take place at the University and or St James’ Park over the course of one day. You arrive in the morning giving you the chance to look around the University and School, find out more about the degree and meet staff and students involved in the programme. During the afternoon you take part in an Assessment Centre. This involves an interview and other assessment tasks and is conducted with the help of our partners, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC). You will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout so that you can get a good feel for what the programme is about.
Find out more about University Visit Days.
You will receive feedback soon after you attend, and if you have been successful you will be formally notified of an offer through the UCAS system. The recruitment process takes longer than for most other degree programmes, but this reflects our commitment to recruit applicants with the right mix of skills and abilities for this programme.
Can I apply to the second or third year of the degree?
Our policy is that we only recruit students to Year 1 of this degree. There is no advanced entry for any student, irrespective of their background.
How long will it take to process my application?
We receive a large number of applications for this programme and because we only offer a place to students who have attended and passed the Open Day/ Assessment Centre, the selection process is longer than for most other degree programmes. We do our very best to review all UCAS forms as quickly as possible. However, under UCAS rules we have to give the same consideration to all the applications we receive by the standard UCAS deadline (normally mid-January). This means that if we do not invite you in December we may need to wait until the January deadline before we decide who to invite to the remaining Open Days/ Assessment Centres in February and March.
I don't have grade A in GCSE Maths - can I still apply?
If you do not have grade A in GCSE Maths we would require you to obtain at least a grade B in A-Level or AS-Level Maths.
Do you accept applications from overseas candidates?
We do accept applications from overseas candidates. As with Home students, we are committed to recruiting applicants with the right mix of skills and abilities for this programme and who also match our academic requirements.
I'm also interested in applying for BA Honours Accounting and Finance (N400) - do I need to apply for both courses via UCAS?
If you apply for the Flying Start programme - NN14 BA ( Honours ) Business Accounting and Finance - and are unsuccessful we will automatically consider you for our three-year Accounting and Finance degree programme, N400, BA Honours Accounting and Finance. You will receive official notification via UCAS if we choose to make you an offer for N400. However, if you are considering including both degrees in your final UCAS choice (perhaps as your firm and insurance choices) you will need to enter both courses on your UCAS form.
