Flying Start Graduate 2007
A Levels: Economics, French, German, Maths
Home Location: Lancaster
- What is your educational background?
I went to Lancaster Girls Grammar School and stayed there for my A-levels - Economics, French, German and Maths. I then completed the 'Flying Start course' and became a Chartered Accountant in September 2007 (a year after I finished my degree).
- Did the degree help you develop your personal skills?
It gave me much real-life experience of giving presentations and other skills necessary for the work place such as time management, coaching others and working in teams.
- What are you doing now?
I'm working as an Auditor in PwC Cayman Islands having moved here from PwC Newcastle in September 2008. I'm working on hedge fund and insurance clients which is an interesting and challenging area, given the current economic turmoil. I work fairly long hours during the week (as a result of the recent problems in this sector) but spend my weekends sunbathing, scuba diving, taking boat trips and playing beach volleyball - which more than makes up for it!
- How has your programme helped develop your career?
It gave me experience of working in Audit as part of my degree and allowed me to quickly build on my experience when I started work post-University. Through PwC I have been able to quickly and easily transfer to the Caribbean and gain experience in new areas.
- How easy was the transition from the degree to full-time working life?
I think it has been much easier than from a traditional degree as you get to experience working life and professional behaviour during your placements.
- Describe a typical day now.
I work five days a week, I play softball a couple of times a week after work and I help to run an equivalent of Young Enterprise. At weekends I relax and spend time on the beach.
