When I read about the Flying Start programme I was immediately interested. The combination of academic study and work placements was exactly what I was looking for and the opportunity to qualify as a Chartered Accountant earlier than by any other route sealed the deal.
I wouldn’t change a thing about my time at university. I loved the closeness which the course provided. Everyone on the course got to know each other really well and certainly better than on other traditional courses. The course not only provided an academic challenge, it was also a really sociable experience. It helped to develop all of my skills so that when I started work full time I felt confident and was definitely seen as a lot more experienced and qualified than the other graduates of my age. Newcastle is a really friendly city, particularly the people. Being so far away from home I was a little nervous before I went up. But it didn’t take long at all to feel like home.
I am now working in PwC’s Executive Advisory team (which sits in the Tax line of service). I’m in a team of 15 people who provide tax planning and compliance advice to 200 of the wealthiest individuals in the country. My work covers all aspects of US and UK personal taxation. The degree has made it so much easier to stand out from the crowd. With so many graduates in the market now you really do need more than a degree to be able to stand out from the crowd. The programme provided that opportunity and I’m still using what I learnt on the course everyday.
