Claire Mulholland
Stage 4
Home City: Leeds
Placement Location: East Midlands
I chose Newcastle primarily for the course, I had never been to Newcastle until the day of my interview! The course sounded like too good an opportunity to miss and I was attrached by the fast-track route to qualifying as a Chartered Accountant.
I have found the course to be challenging in places, but also very rewarding. Many of the modules undertaken are linked to the ICAEW Professional Stage so you can see yourself getting closer to qualifying as an accountant with each exam that you pass! The placements are also good as they enable you to place a meaning on the work you do at university because you actually put the theory you learn into practice during your placements.
The support available throughout the programme is extremely good on the course. You have a personal tutor who you can approach for any reason even when you are on placement. The year groups are split into development teams of 5 students. You work with your Development Teams on a range of presentations and group essays so you become close to your team and help support each other throughout the degree. The nature of the course and the closeness of all year groups mean support is always available.
The placements are hard work but rewarding and they give you a useful insight to the industry. They allow you to start making business contacts and friends within PwC as well as applying the knowledge you gain from your university studies. Placements help consolidate your accounting knowledge and make revision for exams after placement a lot easier.
I look forward to graduating from the course and starting full time at PwC, I hope to stay with PwC and start working my way up the ladder. I hope to work within some of the other departments PwC have, this is a huge benefit of working for PwC as being so large the opportunities to progress and succeed are plentiful.
