Industrial Placements and Work Experience

Student workings working on their CVs

In today’s competitive job market, finding ways to make yourself stand out from the crowd is more important than ever. Gaining some work experience as part of your University degree can be a great way to show employers that you have the kind of practical transferable skills they will be looking for.

Getting first-hand experience of life in a business can also bring to life the academic theories you have learnt, develop your confidence and give you new insights that may help improve your final year performance.

As a student at Newcastle University, you have access to many different types of work experience opportunities. Sometimes this can be as part of your degree programme, enabling you to spend twelve months on a placement with a company. Even if you cannot afford to take a whole year out, you can still take advantage of the Newcastle Work Experience scheme, run by the Careers Service.

The various types of work experience can include:

  • Internships
  • Project work
  • Industrial work placements
  • Voluntary work
  • Gap year

How can you benefit from a work placement?

"Doing a placement is one of the most helpful things you will ever do. It's perfect for getting an idea of what you want to do when you finish university - and you learn so much."
