Accommodation queries

  • Accommodation must be booked online and paid for separately with the University Accommodation Service. All queries regarding accommodation, arrival/departure, extra nights, facilties etc should be directed to them in the first instance.

Academic queries

  • Are the field trips compulsory?
    • The field trips along with teaching time and self study are part of the academic programme and we strongly encourage all students to participate.
  • Reading lists – are these essential/desirable reading?
    • Most reading lists differentiate between essential & desirable reading. Staff try to ensure that any listed material is available online or in the library
  • Do I need to purchase any textbooks?
    • Normally all suggested reading material is either available online, is sent to you electronically or is available in the Robinson Library on campus.
  • Do I need my laptop for classes/lectures?
    • No it is not necessary to have a laptop for class
  • Why are the biotechnology/medicine/etc hours different to other programmes?
    • Some programmes require additional practical sessions – this is reflected in the cost of the programmes.

English language queries

  • I have an English Language qualification but it is not IELTS or TOFEL - is it acceptable?
    • Yes, it may be acceptable if it is at an equivalent level. Please email Intern-SummerSchools@ncl.ac.uk with details of your qualification and we can check it for you.
  • I have studied in English. Do I still need to take an IELTS or TOFEL test?
    • If you have studied in English at school or university for a number of years you do not need to take an IELTS or TOFEL test as long as you are confident that you will be able to understand university lectures, write essays and sit examinations in English. Please state your experience on your application form.

Fees & financial queries

  • What if I change my mind after I pay my fees? Can I get my money back?
    • Withdrawal from General Programmes and Refund Policy:

If you withdraw from the International Summer School more than four weeks before the start date we will refund your fees, minus the £100 non-refundable application fee. If you paid by credit card we can refund the amount back on to your credit card. If you paid your fees by another method we can only send you a sterling cheque for the amount. If you withdraw within four weeks of the start date of the programme it will not be possible to refund your fee.

  • How much money do I need per week?
    • We advise students to have between £50 -£80 per week in spending money
  • I am a current Newcastle University student – do I qualify for a discount?
  • When do I pay my fees?
    • We will advise you of your payment deadline when you apply. Non-EU students must pay their fees in full in order to obtain a CAS (Certificate of Acceptance of Studies) letter which is needed to obtain a visa. For this reason we advise non-EU students to pay their fees as soon as possible to avoid visa delays.

Travel enquiries

  • How close is the metro to the accommodation?
    • Haymarket metro station is 10 minutes walk to Castle Leazes.
  • Which airport is closest to Newcastle?
  • Newcastle University is only 15 minutes drive from Newcastle International Airport. www.newcastleairport.com
  • How far is the university/accommodation from the city?
    • We are a city centre campus and are only 5 minutes walk to the city.

Application & Visa enquiries

  • What is the latest application date?
    • For non-EU students, the closing date for applications is June 8th 2012. Please note that we cannot be held responsible if this date does not allow sufficient time to obtain student visitor visas.

      EU students can apply until June 29th 2012.
  • How long does a visa take to be approved?
    • We cannot advise on the length of time required to obtain a visa -you must check with your local visa issuing office. We would recommend leaving 4-6 weeks for a student visitor visa. Please note there may be additional charges associated with applying for a visa which is your responsibility.
  • What type of visa do I need?
    • Please check with your local visa issuing office. In most circumstances you will need a student visitor visa.

Other enquiries

  • What kind of adaptor do I need to use my electrical equipment in the UK?
    • Please ensure that you have a travel adaptor for US/Europe/Asia etc to UK. Please note that it needs to be UK specific as mainland Europe has different power outlets
  • Do I need to bring formal wear for the awards evening?
    • The awards evening is always a glamorous affair for the students but it is not black tie, so no ball gowns or tuxedos required! Smart dress is appropriate.
  • What’s the weather like in Newcastle during the summer?
    • The weather is Newcastle is always changeable. Summer temperatures in Newcastle can range from 16-24®C or 60-75®F. Please come prepared!
