Internships

“The internship placement was a great and beneficial chance for me as an overseas student to do a placement in a work environment and in a different culture. Moreover, it provided me with chances to meet different people from different backgrounds, learn from them, and learn how to improve my communication skills by dealing with them more and more. Engaging in the internship module, allowed me to learn how to improve different skills needed in a work environment, by researching for methods to be used and applying those methods into real life examples.” Noda Maddah, a student on the 2008 internship programme.

Your training experience within a British company

Internship Placement:

We will match your specification to a company in the North East where you will work for seven weeks. The placements are normally unpaid since in exchange for your time and effort, the host company provides training in the industry sector in which you are based. This provides a great opportunity to gain valuable work experience skills designed to help students in career and personal development.

Internship placements can be arranged in the following fields:

Business, Administration, Marketing, Journalism and Copy Writing, Event Management, Public Relations, IT Systems, Graphic Design, Music Production and Distribution, Engineering, Theatres, Tourism, Hospitality, Museums, Web Development, Import/Export, Translation and Sales.

Assessment

The internship is assessed by the University Careers Service. You are evaluated on:

  • 'organisation and planning',
  • 'personal enterprise', and
  • 'communication and team work'.

During the internship students are required to keep a regular journal in which they reflect on their internship experience and collect evidence of how they have developed and demonstrated their work-related skills. On completion of the internship, students will submit a written portfolio, attend an assessed interview and make a formal presentation in which they analyse and evaluate their skill development and how they made a positive contribution to the organisation hosting their placement.

Host companies also provide formal feedback on progress at a mid-point and end of the internship. Students submit a portfolio of their experience and make a presentation at the end of their placement. This is assessed by the Careers Service and a final mark is awarded.

The seven week placement is worth 20 Newcastle University credits. As students go on from the seven week placement to take a three week academic programme, the full programme is worth 30 Newcastle University credits. This translates to 15 ECTS or 8 US credits. Students taking the internship for credit must check programme acceptability with their home institution before registering.

Host companies provide formal feedback on a student’s progress during the internship. After completing the internship, students go on to take an academic programme
