Roman Britain

  • Programme runs: Wednesday 18th July to Friday 10 August 2012
  • Facilitated by the School of Historical Studies

The School of Historical Studies Roman Britain Summer School is devoted to promoting the archaeology of Roman England. The course will start with 4 days centered around London visiting the British Museum, the Museum of London and various sites around the area. Once in Newcastle there will be 2 weeks of teaching on campus, with a week away on excavation at Maryport on the Cumbrian Coast. This part of the course offers the chance to learn excavation skills on a project run jointly by Newcastle University and English Heritage. The teaching will be a mixture of in classroom learning study tours to the Roman Wall (and surroundings) and handling sessions in the world-class Great North Museum. Teaching will be given by various members of staff from the School of Historical Studies and beyond, including Professor Ian Haynes and Ms. Lindsay Allason-Jones.

Depending on individual credit transfer needs, students will be assessed by a mix of on-going and final stage assessment. At the end of the summer school students will be awarded a certificate stating the programme studied and their grade. Students will be given advance notice of all pre-programme reading material. The programme below is provisional and the teaching sessions may change slightly but the content will remain mostly the same.
