10 Reasons to Study NUMed Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences
#1 - Great progression opportunities
What happens once you successfully complete the Newcastle University Foundation programme in Biological and Biomedical Sciences – what can you do next?
The great advantage of studying our foundation programme is that as long as you successfully complete the programme to the required level, you will automatically be offered a place on either our MBBS programme (subject to interview) or our BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.
To qualify for admission to the MBBS programme, you must achieve CGPA of 3.5 and 70% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test. For the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences programme, you must have achieved a CGPA of 3.0 and 65% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test.
This means that successful foundation students won’t be competing for places on our MBBS or BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes. That’s one less thing for you to worry about – isn’t that great?!
#2 - Certificate conferred by Newcastle University, UK
Where does the Certificate award originate from?
NUMed Malaysia is 100% owned by Newcastle University, UK (originated 1834). Therefore, just like our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences Programme, the award for our Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences is conferred by Newcastle University, UK.
Newcastle University, part of the esteemed UK Russell Group, prides itself on its reputation for high quality so you can be certain that you will receive an excellent education during your time with us.
#3 - Significantly cheaper than UK
What is the cost of studying Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at NUMed compared to studying it in the UK?
At the NUMed campus here in Malaysia, a single inclusive fee is charged to cover the costs of tuition, library, laboratory time, placements, examination, administration fees, and all other academic-related charges for the programme.
For the 2017/18 entry (May commencement) the fees are: RM26,000. To study a similar programme at our Newcastle University, UK campus you will pay a significantly higher fee. There are also living costs to take into consideration. We estimate that living costs in Malaysia range between RM2,000 – RM2,500 per month. In the UK you are looking at living costs ranging between RM4,700 and RM5,000 per month. You will also need to factor in flights between the UK and Malaysia if you are planning to study in the UK. Prices fluctuate all the time, but you can expect to pay between around RM3,500 and RM6,000 for an economy return air ticket.
Therefore, taking all of the above factors into account, studying the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle’s Malaysian campus means you are getting the same quality as studying at the UK campus, but at a fraction of the cost!
#4 - Learn about our MBBS and Biomedical Sciences programmes
Opportunities to find out more about our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Programmes.

A design collaboration between the UK and Malaysia, we are very proud of our state-of-the-art, well equipped facilities.
In fact, we were the first institution in Malaysia to be visited by Google Streets who recorded and mapped the campus. #7 - Recap for your exams…
The NUMed campus is underpinned by excellent IT facilities including campus-wide wifi, but one of the IT features regularly heralded by our students is the University’s innovative ‘Recap system’. This system automatically records each and every lecture on the NUMed campus. The Recap system is a sophisticated piece of software which records the lecturer’s voice alongside their lecture slides. Using the recap system couldn’t be easier; as long as you have an internet connection you can access it from anywhere. You don’t need to listen to the entire lecture either, you can simply dip in and out to hear the bits you missed, or play particular parts over again until you fully understand the concept. This is great news for students who see the particular advantage of this for revision purposes - nifty…!
