10 Reasons to Study NUMed Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences

10 Reasons to Study NUMed Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences

#1 - Great progression opportunities

What happens once you successfully complete the Newcastle University Foundation programme in Biological and Biomedical Sciences – what can you do next?

The great advantage of studying our foundation programme is that as long as you successfully complete the programme to the required level, you will automatically be offered a place on either our MBBS programme (subject to interview) or our BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.

To qualify for admission to the MBBS programme, you must achieve CGPA of 3.5 and 70% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test. For the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences programme, you must have achieved a CGPA of 3.0 and 65% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test.

This means that successful foundation students won’t be competing for places on our MBBS or BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes. That’s one less thing for you to worry about – isn’t that great?!

#2 - Certificate conferred by Newcastle University, UK

Where does the Certificate award originate from?

NUMed Malaysia is 100% owned by Newcastle University, UK (originated 1834). Therefore, just like our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences Programme, the award for our Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences is conferred by Newcastle University, UK.

Newcastle University, part of the esteemed UK Russell Group, prides itself on its reputation for high quality so you can be certain that you will receive an excellent education during your time with us.

#3 - Significantly cheaper than UK

What is the cost of studying Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at NUMed compared to studying it in the UK?

At the NUMed campus here in Malaysia, a single inclusive fee is charged to cover the costs of tuition, library, laboratory time, placements, examination, administration fees, and all other academic-related charges for the programme.

For the 2017/18 entry (May commencement) the fees are: RM26,000. To study a similar programme at our Newcastle University, UK campus you will pay a significantly higher fee. There are also living costs to take into consideration. We estimate that living costs in Malaysia range between RM2,000 – RM2,500 per month. In the UK you are looking at living costs ranging between RM4,700 and RM5,000 per month. You will also need to factor in flights between the UK and Malaysia if you are planning to study in the UK. Prices fluctuate all the time, but you can expect to pay between around RM3,500 and RM6,000 for an economy return air ticket.

Therefore, taking all of the above factors into account, studying the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle’s Malaysian campus means you are getting the same quality as studying at the UK campus, but at a fraction of the cost!

#4 - Learn about our MBBS and Biomedical Sciences programmes

Opportunities to find out more about our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science Programmes.

Whilst you are studying your Foundation Certificate at NUMed, you will have ample opportunity to learn more about our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes. You will do this in a variety of ways, for example, by interacting with students who are already studying on these programmes, and by taking time to speak to the lecturers of those courses (some of whom will be teaching you during your foundation year).

Plus, studying on the NUMed campus will give you the very best idea of what it’s like to study at a world-renowned high quality UK University such as Newcastle. In addition, this programme is designed to prepare you to study medicine or biomedicine and features tailored modules such as ‘Foundation of Medical studies’ which gives you real experience of life as a medical/biomedical student.

#5 - Fabulous facilities!

What are the facilities like at Newcastle University in Malaysia?

Well we don’t like to boast, but Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director General of Health, Ministry of Health said we had the best medical school in Malaysia when he visited our campus! A design collaboration between the UK and Malaysia, we are very proud of our state-of-the-art, well equipped facilities.

In fact, we were the first institution in Malaysia to be visited by Google Streets who recorded and mapped the campus. See for yourself what the facilities are like on our interactive map, and be sure to check out The James Building (the laboratory complex) where you will spend much of your time: http://bit.ly/2eOxxMF

These apartments are managed by NUMed and you can therefore expect a responsive and efficient service.

#7 - Recap for your exams…

The NUMed campus is underpinned by excellent IT facilities including campus-wide wifi, but one of the IT features regularly heralded by our students is the University’s innovative ‘Recap system’. This system automatically records each and every lecture on the NUMed campus. The Recap system is a sophisticated piece of software which records the lecturer’s voice alongside their lecture slides. Using the recap system couldn’t be easier; as long as you have an internet connection you can access it from anywhere. You don’t need to listen to the entire lecture either, you can simply dip in and out to hear the bits you missed, or play particular parts over again until you fully understand the concept. This is great news for students who see the particular advantage of this for revision purposes - nifty…!

#8 - Great location and onsite facilities

So where is Newcastle University’s Malaysian branch campus, and what does it have to offer?

Newcastle University UK’s Malaysian branch campus (NUMed) is situated in a brand new city called Iskandar Puteri (formerly known as Nusajaya) in Johor. Our nearby neighbours are the UK’s Southampton and Reading Universities. Although it is a new city, there is plenty to keep you occupied nearby from the bustling AEON shopping centre complete with bowling alley and cinema, to Legoland which is a short bus ride away from the NUMed campus.

In close proximity to the campus and shared by our fellow universities is the EduCity Sports complex comprising outdoor arena and pitches for field sports and athletics; indoor arena and facilities for sports such as badminton, volley ball etc; gymnasium; and a 50-metre swimming pool.

On campus we have a a Dance Studio, a recreation room with mini-gym and table tennis and a Student Recreation Centre equipped with a pool table and wide screen TV complete with Astro subscription!

You won’t go short of food either as we have ‘Foodlicious’ offering a wide variety of meals operating out of Tyne Café. In addition, we have FAME Coffee (our very own answer to Starbucks!) serving pizza, pasta, snacks and *wonderful* coffee, operating out of our Garden Café.
