NUMed launches alternative pathway to medicine degree

Those aspiring to become doctors will be thrilled by the news of the launch of a foundation course designed to prepare them for a degree in medicine. From May 2016 Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) will offer a Foundation Certificate that will give participants an opportunity of a guaranteed entry in to one of NUMed’s prestigious medical and biomedical programs.

The Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Science is a 12-month course that offers students an alternative and more efficient route to medical school. As opposed to taking A-levels, students can take this tailored course and have the added bonus of being able to secure a place at NUMed!

“I am delighted that NUMed is offering this pathway to potential students. The course, approved by the MOA and Ministry of Education, is the equivalent to a similar successful course currently offered by Newcastle University in the UK. It is a unique opportunity to experience campus life while being introduced to the British ethos and way of studying. If you are interested in becoming a doctor, this course is excellent preparation for it,” said Chris Baldwin, Dean of Medical Sciences at NUMed.

Newcastle was the first UK University to establish a fully-owned medical campus overseas. The state-of-the-art campus located in Nusajaya, Johor was purpose built in 2011. NUMed is on the way to becoming a leading Southeast Asian centre of academic medicine – driven by Newcastle University’s strength in medical and biomedical teaching and research.  It also aims to support the nation’s aspiration to become an international education hub, and a global healthcare player. Newcastle recently became one of only 14 universities in the world to achieve five plus QS Stars from QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the first international assessment of its kind.

A huge attraction of the foundation certificate is that the students will be given a taste of what life is like pursuing a medical degree. They will live on NUMed’s campus and will be taught by the NUMed professors. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Science and Engineering, English and Medical Studies are the components of the 12-month certificate, the subjects that prepare students best for a medical degree. The course also offers a ‘hands on’ element with practical classes, including An Introduction to the Anatomy, to give students a better understanding of the kind of subjects they will study while pursuing a degree in medicine.

Students who complete the course with CGPA of 3.5 and 70% or more in an English for Academic Purposes test, will be automatically offered a place on NUMed’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. MBBS candidates have to pass an interview in which they have to show their understanding of medicine and a desire to become a doctor. Once this is passed they are set on the path to becoming tomorrow’s doctors.

For an offer of admission into the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences programme, the students need to complete the course with a CGPA of 3.0 and achieve 65% or more in an English for Academic Purposes test.

Upon MBBS and BSc graduation the students obtain a degree that is conferred by Newcastle University, UK. The MBBS degree is a UK Primary Medical Qualification. This means that NUMed graduates become eligible for provisional registration as a doctor with both the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) and the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). NUMed offers the first GMC approved overseas programme for provisionally registered doctors to convert to full registration.

Professor Reg Jordan, CEO and Provost of NUMed said:  “We are very excited about launching the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Science and look forward to welcoming the students in April 2016. There will be 30 places and those who successfully complete the course will be able to embark on a medical degree at NUMed in September 2017. This is an important milestone for NUMed and we are proud to be able to help students prepare for a degree in medicine.”

Those taking the course will also be able to mingle with current NUMed students on a daily basis and experience the all-round learning experience that NUMed is famed for. They can do so through a variety of social and sporting events that are organised by over 20 of NUMed’s student societies throughout the year.

About NUMed

Newcastle University UK, has established an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia to provide its undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MB BS) and the Biomedical Sciences (BSc), and opportunities for postgraduate study. The programmes of study are equivalent to those of Newcastle’s UK-based provision, and lead to the award of the same degrees. By choosing to study at NUMed Malaysia, students will obtain a reputable UK qualification, from an internationally recognized university, at a cost significantly less than that of studying in the UK. The undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) degrees were launched in 2009 and BSc degrees in the Biomedical Sciences were launched in 2013. Both programmes offer opportunities for periods of study in the UK.
