Ten reasons to study the Newcastle University Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences
1. Great progression opportunities
If you successfully complete the Foundation Certificate at Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) to the required level, you will automatically be offered a place on either our Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) programme (subject to interview) or our BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.
This means you won’t be competing for places on those programmes. That’s one less thing for you to worry about!
To qualify for admission to the MBBS programme, you must achieve CGPA of 3.5 and 70% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test. For the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences programme, you must have achieved a CGPA of 3.0 and 65% or greater in an English for Academic Purposes test.
2. Certificate conferred by Newcastle University, UK
NUMed Malaysia is 100% owned by the leading UK University, Newcastle University. Therefore, just like our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences Programme, the award for our Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences is conferred by Newcastle University, UK.
Newcastle University, part of the esteemed UK Russell Group, has more than 175 years of history and a world-class reputation for research excellence, so you can be certain that you will receive an excellent education during your time with us.
3. Significantly more affordable than the UK
Studying the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle’s Malaysian campus means you are getting the same quality of tuition as studying at the UK campus, but at a fraction of the cost!
4. Insight in our Medical and Biomedical Science courses
The Foundation Certificate is designed to prepare you to study medicine or biomedicine and features tailored modules such as ‘Foundation of Medical studies’ which gives you real experience of life as a medical/biomedical student.
While studying your Foundation Certificate at NUMed, you will be afforded the opportunity to learn more about our MBBS and BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes. You will also interact with students who are already studying on these programmes and speak to the lecturers of those courses (some of whom will be teaching you during your foundation year).
5. Fabulous facilities!
A design collaboration between the UK and Malaysia, we are very proud of our state-of-the-art, well equipped facilities. Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director General of Health, Ministry of Health said we had the best medical school in Malaysia when he visited our campus!
6. High quality, safe and secure accommodation
Students who enrol on our Foundation Certificate are guaranteed a place in our very popular NUMed managed accommodation. This new accommodation offers high-quality self-catering air conditioned apartments, arranged as a number of study-bedrooms sharing a central kitchen, living room and shower facilities and comes with free wireless Internet access.
The apartments are gated and the 24-hour security patrol is managed by NUMed. All of our younger students are housed with senior students for extra support and there is an on-site warden.
All students have free access to a swimming pool and gymnasium on-site. The accommodation is just a 10-minute drive from the campus, with free, regular transport provided to the campus and nearby areas.
7. Recap for your exam
The NUMed campus is underpinned by excellent IT facilities including campus-wide Wi-Fi. One aspect regularly praised by students is our innovative ‘Recap system’.
This system automatically records each and every lecture on the NUMed campus. This is particularly useful when it comes to revision as the software records the lecturer’s voice alongside their lecture slides and the students can replay the bits they’ve missed.

Newcastle University UK, has established an international branch campus in Johor, Malaysia to provide its undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MB BS) and the Biomedical Sciences (BSc), and opportunities for postgraduate study. The programmes of study are equivalent to those of Newcastle’s UK-based provision, and lead to the award of the same degrees. By choosing to study at NUMed Malaysia, students will obtain a reputable UK qualification, from an internationally recognized university, at a cost significantly less than that of studying in the UK. The undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) degrees were launched in 2009 and BSc degrees in the Biomedical Sciences were launched 2013. Both programmes offer opportunities for periods of study in the UK.
