Course Overview

The course you will study is equivalent to the one delivered at our University in the UK. Following successful completion of the programme you will be awarded the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences by Newcastle University, UK.

This programme is intended to serve as a pre-undergraduate Foundation programme for Malaysian students intending to study medicine, biological or biomedical sciences or science at undergraduate level in Malaysia at NUMed, or another Malaysian HE institution, depending on the final grades achieved.

The Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (FIS) programme offered at NUMed Malaysia is approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA/PA 4131) and registered with the Ministry of Higher Education (N/010/3/0361).

The length of the programme is 12 months.

Programme aims

We aim to provide a programme which:

  • equips students with the English language competence they need to study at degree level at NUMed Malaysia or in another Higher Education Provider
  • provides students with the intellectual development and subject knowledge they need to be academically capable of studying medicine and/or biomedical science subjects at degree level at NUMed Malaysia, Newcastle University or in another Higher Education Provider
  • builds a students’ study skills so that they are capable of entering an Higher Education institution offering a degree level education
  • provides practical experience of British University teaching methods
  • enables students to develop confidence in communicating and learning in English
  • encourages students to undertake self-evaluation to help them identify additional needs
  • complies with University, MQA and QAA codes of practice

Progression onto Programmes at NUMed

Students who successfully complete the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences to the required level, will be automatically offered a place on either our MB BS programme (subject to interview) or our 2 + 1 BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences programme.

To qualify for admission to the MB BS programme at NUMed, you must achieve an overall average grade of 70% with 70% in English for Academic Purposes, 75% in Biology 1 and Biology 2 and 70% in Foundation Medical Studies.

To qualify for admission to the 2 + 1  BSc (Honours) Biomedical Science programme offered at NUMed and Newcastle UK you must achieve an overall average grade of 65% with 65% in English for Academic Purposes and & 70% in Biology 1 and 2.

JPA scholars intending to further their studies in Medicine or Biomedicine at NUMed must achieve a minimum grade of 3.75 to continue to benefit from JPA funding.

While NUMed Malaysia was only established in 2009, the history and heritage of the University in the UK dates back to 1834, when a School of Medicine and Surgery was first established in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Course Details

This programme is intended to serve as a pre-undergraduate course for students intending to study medicine, biomedical or biological sciences or pharmacy at undergraduate level at NUMed, in Newcastle UK or in another Malaysian or UK higher education institution depending on the final grades achieved.

Modules

The curriculum is arranged with eight (180 UK credits) modules being studied over three semesters as follows. The programme consists of the following modules:

Learning outcomes

On completing the programme students should:

  • have acquired a basic knowledge and understanding of topics and concepts in biological science, physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics (depending on the degree programme to be studied subsequently) needed to sustain successful study in medicine and the biological and biomedical sciences
  • have developed the necessary practical skills to enable specified laboratory or field experiments to be carried out effectively and safely
  • be able to apply appropriate quantitative methods to experimental data and to interpret experimental results
  • have an appreciation of the culture of UK higher education and its expectations of students
  • have knowledge and understanding of academic English in order to successfully start a degree programme at undergraduate level
  • understand the basic requirements for writing a competent essay/case study report or laboratory report

Teaching & Assessment

The teaching and assessment for the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences programme is delivered at NUMed Malaysia is equivalent to what students studying in the UK receive.

The teaching and learning strategy encourages students to gain gradual knowledge and understanding. You will gain this knowledge and understanding through lectures and practical laboratory sessions. This is further supported by reading, seminar discussion and tutorials. English is taught in smaller classes and reinforced through practice. Case studies and project work will involve an element of student research.

Induction

During the first week of the first semester you will attend an induction programme. New students will receive a general introduction to campus life and the University’s principal support services. You will also receive general information about EduCity. New students will receive detailed programme information and their programme timetable.

Assessment

The Foundation programme at NUMed mirrors the Foundation programme offered at Newcastle University. The components of the programme fall into four broad areas:

  • knowledge and understanding of the subject covered in the programme
  • intellectual skills which are used in your future studies
  • practical skills in the laboratory
  • transferrable skills for your future careers and life

Knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding is assessed by:

  • examinations
  • written coursework (such as numerical exercises, essays, case studies, project reports and laboratory reports)
  • in-course tests
  • observation of ability to carry out specific practical experiments

Intellectual skills

Intellectual skills are assessed as part of the overall assessment of case study and project reports and/or oral presentations, calculation class exercises, laboratory work and laboratory reports. In particular intellectual skills are assessed by the Study Skills module and unseen examinations.

Practical laboratory and scientific skills

Practical laboratory and scientific skills are assessed through observation of experimental technique and laboratory reports, seminar/tutorial exercises. They are also assessed in some tests and exams. English language competency is tested directly in the English for Academic Purposes module using a mixture of tests and coursework. This module covers reading, writing, speaking and listening. Other modules indirectly assess English language competence and the ability to take notes and use sources.

Transferrable skills

Transferrable skills are addressed through:

  • group work
  • oral presentations
  • case studies
  • essays
  • laboratory reports

You are also encouraged to prepare a reflective log.

Upon successful completion of the entire programme you will be awarded the Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, which will be conferred by Newcastle University UK.

Fees & funding

The overall tuition costs of obtaining the Newcastle University Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Science programme with NUMed Malaysia and Newcastle UK is significantly less than the cost of studying for the same programme in the UK.

A single inclusive fee is charged to cover the costs of tuition, library, laboratory, placements, examination, administration fees, and all other academic-related charges for the programme.

Fees 2018 - 2019

Malaysian students

RM26,000 for the 12 month programme.

International Students

RM29,380 for the 12 month programme.

Other expenses

You should note that the fees do not include the cost of your living accommodation in Malaysia.

Students studying on our Foundation Certificate in Biological and Biomedical Science programme are strongly advised to stay at the NUMed Managed student accommodation. You will be advised on how to book this once you have been offered a place on the programme.

Refund Fee Policy

Withdrawal from a programme of study

In accordance with Newcastle University's policy on tuition fees refunds, the amount of any tuition fees refunded is dependent on the date of withdrawal from the course of study.

If a student withdraws at any time within the first semester of the first year of a programme, no refund will be made for the first semester fees.

For withdrawal from semester two of the first year onwards, tuition fees are charged on a weekly basis up to the date of withdrawal from the programme. No refunds can be made before the student has:

  • notified, in writing, the NUMed Malaysia Student Office of intended withdrawal
  • the Student Office has been formally notified of your withdrawal by the Dean for Academic Affairs
  • the last date of attendance is confirmed

It will also be necessary for the student to make a written request for a refund of Tuition Fees.

Expulsion or suspension

In line with the policy of Newcastle University, the parent institution, a student expelled or suspended as a result of disciplinary proceedings shall have no right to a refund of Tuition Fees.
