Entry Requirements

Academic qualifications

We recognize that students will apply to our programme with a range of qualifications. We consider each applicant on an individual basis, taking into account the information you provide in your application, including past academic performance and potential. The following information gives an indication of the type and level of entrance qualifications, but we encourage you to contact us to discuss your position if you are a student offering qualifications other than those described below.

A-Level Applicants wishing to be considered with A levels are normally required to achieve 15 points at A2  (A=5; B=4; C=3; D=2; E=1). Subjects should include Chemistry, Biology, and Physics (or Mathematics) at A2 level.  Usually we take the three highest ‘A’ level grades offered, however further consideration may be given to additional academic achievement. We would normally expect applicants to sit all A Levels in the same academic year. We do not accept General Studies or Critical Thinking as an A2 level entry qualification.

International Baccalaureate. For applicants offering International Baccalaureate qualifications, normally a minimum of 37 points (including bonus points available for the Theory of Knowledge/Extended Essay) is required. No subject should be graded less than grade 5 and with Higher Level in Chemistry or Biology of at least grade 6.  A combination including 2 Sciences and Mathematics at Higher Level, and three other subjects including English are desirable but not essential.

STPM. (Malaysia Higher Education Certificate)The full STPM is considered comparable to the overall GCE Advanced Level (H2).
Normally 11 points, based upon the total of three SGP of three academic subjects including Biology, Chemistry and Physics (or Mathematics) is required.

The following may be considered, dependent upon the grade: a Polytechnic or university diploma, UEC, Ontario Grade 12 (CIMP, CPU, etc), Australian Year 12 (ATAR), Monash University Foundation Year, Sri Lanka A Level, All India Sen SC, ISC of the CISE India, UNSW FY/UNIPREP Indonesia, South African National Senior Cert, American AP & Graduate applications. Other foundation programmes, matriculation and community college qualifications are not usually considered.

Certificated evidence of original certificates is required prior to entry.

  • Graduate applications: Applicants must have achieved, or expect to achieve, at least an upper second class Honours degree (or equivalent), or an Integrated Masters degree.
  • Widening participation: For those applicants who do not achieve the entry requirements as outlined above but for whom there is additional evidence that they may have the capability to study medicine, we will run a pre-U selection course, successful completion of which may permit admission with a lower offer.

UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT)

In addition to achieving the appropriate academic entrance qualifications outlined above, on entry into the programme it is desirable that all students have a UKCAT result. More information is available on the UK Clinical Aptitude Test website. UKCAT scores may be taken into account when considering overall academic achievement at the time of student selection.

English

Students must be proficient in both written and spoken English.  Those applicants requested to provide an English Language qualification, must achieve an overall score of 7 or greater in the IELTS test, with the score for no individual band being less than 6.5. Health requirements for admission

NUMed Malaysia has an overriding duty of care to the public with whom students come into close contact. All students are required to comply with the UK Department of Health’s guidance on health clearance for healthcare workers as well as equivalent Malaysian legislation. Early clinical contact at NUMed means that students will be asked to provide proof of their immunisation status on entry. Immunity against the following is required: Polio; Tetanus; Varicella (Chicken Pox); Diphtheria; Measles; Mumps; Rubella; TB.

NUMed Malaysia and Newcastle University follow the UK Medical Schools Council protocol on blood borne viruses. For further information, see the Medical Schools Council website.

Early in the course students will be required to be screened for Hepatitis B; Hepatitis C and HIV. All aspects of a student’s medical record will be bound by the same duty of confidentiality as for any doctor-patient interaction and informed by the same ethical guidance. For their own protection students are advised to commence an immunisation programme for Hepatitis B.

The status of any individual in respect of blood borne viruses will not be a factor in the admissions selection process and will not prevent them completing the medical degree. However, Malaysian Government regulations may prevent graduates carrying Blood Borne viruses from practising in Government hospitals. Anyone in this position should discuss the implications before entering Medical School.

All applicants who take up an offer from NUMed Malaysia and Newcastle University are required to complete an Occupational Health questionnaire. From the information provided, the Occupational Health Service will assess the immunisation status, and students will be required to fulfil any stipulated requirements identified from this assessment.

Central Criminal Registry disclosure

All potential medical students are required to disclose at the point of application whether they possess any criminal record which may make them unsuitable to study or practise medicine. Applicants are invited to discuss with NUMed the relevance of any caution or conviction at the time of application.

We reserve the right to withdraw an offer if an applicant does not declare any relevant caution or conviction in their application. NUMed Malaysia reserves the right to discontinue a student’s studies on receipt of an unsatisfactory disclosure.
