Smoking Cessation Services
Newcastle University acknowledges that the second hand tobacco smoke is both a public and work place health hazard and as from January 2007 has implemented a smoke free campus. Smoking is not permitted in any University premises or grounds at any time by any person regardless of their status or business in the University.

Newcastle & North Tyneside Service is the key local service which can be contacted on 0191 219 5111 - it offers a range of services:
- Referral Method: People can refer themselves or are referred by health care professionals in hospital and primary care.
- Times Helpline: 9am - 5pm
- Service: A treatment service to help residents of Newcastle aid North Tyneside to stop smoking in primary care, secondary care, and in the workplace and the community.
- Pregnancy services: Specialist smoking and pregnancy advisors provide one-to-one treatment for pregnant woman and their families.
- Ethnic services: Health development workers provide stop smoking advice and treatment to the Asian community in Newcastle. Interpreters are provided to facilitate access to services by ethnic minorities and asylum seekers.
- Other services: Specialist advisors work with manual workers, young people and pregnant woman, as key population groups. A specialist advisor works in community settings. Also has several drop-in clinics staffed by nurse prescribers, where no appointment is necessary.

- Smoke free England Information Line - 0800 169 1697 - the Government has also launched an information line for people who have questions about the upcoming smoke-free law. The line has been set up to offer everyone in England information and support in the run up to the introduction of smoke free legislation in summer 2007.
