Admissions Policy

For IGDS modules, the principal criteria are:

  1. An ability to benefit from doing the module.
  2. Full-time employment within the chemical or process industry sector.
  3. Satisfactory arrangements for payment for the module.

For the MSc degree, admissions policy is directed towards recruiting graduates of good academic standard with the ability and motivation to successfully complete the degree. The following criteria will normally be applied:

  1. A first degree, eg BEng or BSc, in an appropriate subject with a minimum standard of 2.2 Honours, or equivalent.

The expectation is that the majority of delegates will be graduates in chemical,  electrical or instrumentation and control engineering. However, applicants with degrees in other engineering or science disciplines such as Chemistry, Physics or Computing could also be admitted. The course structure has been designed to cater for graduates from a variety of backgrounds.

  2. Full-time employment by a company within the chemical or process industry sector.

The company is expected in advance to give a commitment to payment of fees, either on a lump sum or on a module-at-a-time basis (see the Fees menu).

  3. Satisfactory references as/if appropriate.

  4. Sufficient competency in the English language to satisfy University matriculation criteria.

Candidates whose mother tongue is not English will be expected to offer a suitable English language qualification such as TOEFL (minimum score of 575) or IELTS (minimum score of 6.5).

Whilst there is no minimum age criterion, it is recognised that engineers tend not to become involved in control and automation work until they have gained several years' experience of plant design and operational issues. This is reinforced by the training and experience requirements for membership of professional bodies. The age range of delegates varies from their early 20’s through to mid 40’s.

For the Diploma, the same criteria will normally apply as for the MSc except that candidates with 3rd class Honours degrees and non graduates, eg holders of HND or HNC qualifications with significant and relevant industrial experience, may be registered.
