Year 11 Chemistry Masterclass

Newcastle and Northumbria University Year 11 Masterclass Programme

Students at the Chemistry Masterclass

Chemistry Masterclass at Newcastle University

Saturday 5th March 2011

Have you ever wondered how fruity-tasting sweets are flavoured? The answer may surprise you – not by extracting the flavouring from real fruit, but by synthesising it in a chemistry laboratory!

So how do you synthesise and purify the flavouring component needed for a particular sweet?

How can you determine the purity of the product and why is this important?

If you would like to find out more about these issues then the Chemistry Masterclass could be for you.

You will have the chance to synthesise and purify a key fruit flavouring compound in the laboratory and to determine its level of purity, thus expanding your awareness of the subject and also giving you a taste of what Chemistry might be like to study at A-level and University.

This Masterclass also contains a demonstration lecture entitled “Chemistry of the Senses” which aims to show how chemistry is involved in each of our five senses – sight (light), sound, taste, smell and touch (hot and cold) via some spectacular and/or well-known chemical demonstrations.

There will also be a short presentation on the wide range of career options open to chemistry graduates – not just the stereotypical ones of wearing a white coat and working in a laboratory!

All bookings for Masterclass places must be made by teachers, please click here for more information.
